The Local Area
The Los Velez area is located in Almeria, the hottest province in Andalucia with an average of more than 3,100 hours of annual sunshine. It is a largely agricultural area but both historically and culturally rich.
The Los Velez Park is close to the borders of both Granada and Murcia Provinces and has very good road links via the A92 North and autovia Mediterraneo E15 motorways.
There are historical caves, castles, beautiful and breathtaking churches to visit and if you would like a day at the beach it is only 45 minutes away.
Although very rural and quiet with no industry the area provides virtually everything. Excellent road and motorway networks with very light traffic mean that the four airports which service the area are within easy reach. Alicante approx 1hr 30 mins, Almeria 1hr 10 mins, Granada 1hour 30 mins and Murcia (St Javier) 1hr 15mins.
There are two hospitals within 25 minutes drive, doctors, a health centre, chemists, dentists, good pre-school facilities, junior and secondary schools, vets, shops of all descriptions, supermarkets, street markets, bars, discos for children, sports centre, public swimming pools and a wealth of good restaurants. The Los Velez Golf course has recently been approved and development is in progress.
We appreciate that it is important for you to experience the area before you buy here. To help you do that, we can arrange accommodation for short or longer stays at reasonable prices. For example, La Casa de Felipe (www.lacasadefelipe.net) has attractive apartments within Velez Rubio.
Los Velez contains four towns:
Velez Rubio
A small but busy market town with approximately 6500 inhabitants and the commercial and economic centre of the Los Velez area. Most of the public services are found in Velez Rubio (the courts, high school, boarding school, Social security office, Property Registry, etc.). In the town there are many historical and artistic buildings, some of which are open to the public.
Velez Blanco
Velez Blanco is a picturesque hiltop village, blessed with a magnificent castle built by Italian artists between 1505 and 1515 and a dominating position with stunning views across the valley. There is an abundance of water and fountains, with an extensive and fertile valley. The town has some of the best restaurants in the area.
Chirivel
An agricultural town famous for its white houses and welcoming inns, bars and hotels for travellers through-out the centuries
Maria
The last village in the north of Almeria with an altitude of 1198 meters above sea level set amidst the stunning Sierra Maria-Los Velez natural parkland and rich agricultural land.
